From 14 – 22 September, the Sandstone Ridge Walk, Talk and Ride Festival will be offering over 20 free events celebrating the beauty and heritage of the Sandstone Ridge landscape.

The events cover a wide range of activities, including short walks and full day rambles, cycle rides, wildlife talks, visits to castles, gardens, woodlands and wetlands, family adventures, and poetry workshops with John Linley.

From discovering the Delamere Beaver Project or the National Plant Collection of Mentha (mint) to den building, geology, and industrial heritage, there’s something for everyone. Events are led by knowledgeable and experienced leaders.

All activities are free, but you need to book in advance to reserve places. Children are welcome at most sessions – check the individual listing.

A number of the activities are accessible via public transport (in particular Frodsham and Delamere railway stations). So if you can come by train, do!

What is the Sandstone Ridge?

Standing prominently above the Cheshire Plain, the Sandstone Ridge covers more than 230 square kilometres of rolling hills and sandstone escarpments, punctuated with glacial meres and mosses.

It’s a magical landscape, rich in history, geology and wildlife.

Protecting the Ridge for the future

CPRE Cheshire are currently supporting the Sandstone Ridge Trust to become recognised by Natural England as a new National Landscape (the new name for an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – AONB). Natural England are in the process of evaluating the area, and there will be a period of public consultation. If designation is agreed, this will give this beautiful region a high level of protection into the future.
